PROJECT

Pavilion – Garden Room in Flood Zone

OVERVIEW

This project involved the construction of a contemporary garden room/pavilion within the grounds of an existing riverside property. The new-build structure serves as a tranquil garden room, designed to connect seamlessly with the surrounding landscape while addressing the technical challenges of its flood-prone location.

The building is elevated above ground level on structural columns, with a suspended steel framework and block-and-beam ground floor system, allowing exceptionally high floodwaters to pass safely beneath the structure without compromising its integrity. This engineering solution ensures both the longevity of the pavilion and compliance with flood zone regulations.

The superstructure is a traditionally built flat-roof form, offering clean lines and a modern aesthetic. A standout feature is the large glazed pocket sliding door, which opens fully to merge the indoor space with an expansive Millboard decked terrace—blurring the boundary between inside and out, and framing stunning views of the adjacent river.

This carefully crafted pavilion is a perfect example of contemporary riverside architecture—balancing elegance, practicality, and environmental resilience.
